Involving men in healthy masculinity and gender equity promotion: outcomes of a community-based training program
2026 • This article presents findings from an evaluation of the Alberta Men's Network (AMN) Foundational Training Program – a community-based initiative designed to support facilitators working with men on gender justice, healthy and caring masculinities, and violence prevention. Grounded in transnational feminist, antiracist, and anticolonial principles, the program brought together a diverse group of participants over three sessions to engage with gender-based violence, group facilitation methods, and critical reflections on masculinity, responsibility, and community leadership.

Challenges and Opportunities: Exploring the Contexts of Men’s Gender Justice Roles in Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines
2024 • Through this paper, we sought to establish the roots of an emerging global research initiative embedded within community and activist work. We explore the opportunities, tensions, and challenges while developing a transdisciplinary community of research and practice and the importance of international collaborations in addressing a pervasive social issue such as GBV.

Transforming Masculinities Through Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Reflections on Building a Community of Practice Framework
2023 • In this article, we emphasize the unique local contexts for our work and the learnings that emerged from our CoP. We propose a framework that can be used to advance collective and interdisciplinary agendas across global contexts and further the work of groups committed to transformative social change.

Immigrant Men and Racism in Canada: Impacts on Well-being and Family Wellness
2023 • Employing a feminist participatory action research approach (FPAR), a culturally diverse group of men and women (12) involved in a community-based violence prevention group convened three focus groups to explore how racialized immigrant men experience migration and resettlement in Canada, and the effects of this on personal and family wellness and domestic violence.

Nurturing father and daughter relationships and family well-being: A community-based transformative initiative
2022 • In collaboration with diverse communities in Calgary, Canada, a local network launched a community-based and culturally relevant program, Honouring Fathers and Daughters, to promote positive fatherhood roles and to celebrate both nurturing fatherhood practices and the significance of father-daughter relationships. Through qualitative analysis, responses indicated three key themes: valuing and appreciating father-daughter relationships, the need for social and cultural spaces for the engagement and transformation of fathers, and the importance of providing opportunities for fathers to learn new strategies for parenting and bonding with their daughters.

Men’s survey: Exploring well-being, healthy relationships, and violence prevention
2021 • A men’s survey was designed to explore and identify the capacities and resources required by a diverse population of Canadian men. Responses from Indigenous and African Canadian men highlight the need for an intersectional lens in understanding men’s well-being and violence prevention.

Feminist participatory action research with men to prevent intimate partner violence: Employing an intersectional stance
2020 • Employing Reid and Frisby’s feminist participatory action research model (FPAR) as a guide, men from diverse ethno-cultural backgrounds worked with women leaders to take action on the issue of intimate partner violence. As white women situated in both academic and community spaces, we discuss knowledges, actions, and learnings from this FPAR process, underscoring the tensions and contradictions of employing FPAR in real-life contexts.

Community-led transformative research tools and applications: From Canada to Nepal
2019 • Focusing on two contexts, Canada and Nepal, we highlight examples of transformative community led research tools through the lens of social work activism. By authenticating our theories of knowledge, we enter a critical discussion on the use of media conferences and street actions as designed and differentially employed in each study.

War and partner violence: Refugee women’s experiences and impacts on resettlement.
2010 • As they attempt to settle in and adapt to Canadian society, refugee women may not only have experienced war or state violence, some may also be survivors of intimate partner violence. Through in-depth interviews with five refugee women, this article explores the impact of these forms of violence on the participants.
